Risk & Safety Manager

Fence Factory Location: Ventura County, CA (On-Site / Hybrid) Reports to: Executive Leadership Compensation: $75,000–$100,000 base salary (commensurate with experience) Industry: Construction / Trades / Field Operations

This Is a Career, Not Just a Job

Fence Factory has been serving Southern California for over 40 years. We are a family-oriented, field-operations business that takes pride in the work we do and the people we employ. We are not looking to fill a seat. We are looking for the right person to grow with us, and someone who will help us build a genuine safety culture from the ground up and be a cornerstone of this company for years to come.

If you are early in your safety or risk management career, hungry to learn, and motivated by the idea of making a real and lasting difference in a company that will invest in you — this role was written for you.

What We Are Building

We are honest about where we are: we have a solid safety foundation, but we know there is more work to do. We want to move beyond compliance-based safety toward a culture where every employee, from the office to the field, understands why safety matters, takes ownership of it, and feels proud to be part of a company that does things the right way.

The person we hire will be part of building that culture. This is not a role where you inherit a finished program and maintain it. This is a role where you help shape what Fence Factory becomes.

What You Will Learn

We are committed to developing this person into a complete risk and safety professional. That includes:

  • Workers' Compensation Management — You will learn to manage WC claims from first report through closure, working directly with our third-party administrators, adjusters, medical providers, and defense counsel
  • Captive Insurance Strategy: Fence Factory operates under a captive insurance structure. We will provide full training and mentorship on how captive programs work, how claims defense interacts with program performance, and how to manage our exposure strategically
  • Field Safety Leadership: You will learn to conduct job-site audits, lead investigations, train supervisors, and build safety accountability into our field operations
  • California Compliance: You will develop deep expertise in Cal/OSHA requirements, workers' comp regulations, return-to-work programs, and regulatory reporting

We will support your pursuit of professional certifications (CSP, CHST, ARM, or equivalent) and invest in your ongoing education as you grow into this role.

Your Responsibilities From Day One

While we will train and develop you, we are looking for someone ready to contribute immediately to the following areas:

  • Assist in managing workers' compensation claims, coordinating with TPAs, adjusters, and medical providers under the guidance of executive leadership
  • Conduct field safety inspections, identify hazards, and follow up on corrective actions
  • Maintain accurate and defensible incident reports, safety documentation, and training records
  • Support return-to-work and modified duty programs for injured employees
  • Assist in developing and delivering safety training for field crews and supervisors
  • Help track and report key safety metrics including incident rates, claim costs, and program participation
  • Be a visible, consistent, and approachable safety presence across our divisions

What We Are Looking For

We are prioritizing character, work ethic, and genuine passion for safety over an extensive resume. That said, the following experience and qualities will set you apart:

Experience (some combination of the following):

  • 2–5 years of experience in safety, risk management, workers' compensation, insurance, HR, or a related field
  • Any background working in construction, trades, field operations, transportation, or a similar hands-on industry is a significant plus
  • Experience working with injured employees, insurance claims, or regulatory compliance in any capacity

Education:

  • A degree in safety, risk management, business, or a related field is preferred
  • We will absolutely consider candidates without a degree who bring relevant hands-on experience, strong analytical skills, and the right character

Who You Are:

  • You are a natural communicator who can build trust with field crews and executive leadership alike
  • You have the backbone to enforce standards respectfully but firmly; even when it is uncomfortable
  • You are organized, detail-oriented, and take documentation seriously
  • You are curious and self-directed; you do not wait to be told what to learn
  • You are in this for the long haul. You want to build something, not just pass through
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is a meaningful plus given our workforce

What Success Looks Like in Year One

  • You know our workforce, our divisions, and our field operations personally
  • You are handling day-to-day WC claim coordination with increasing independence
  • Supervisors see you as a resource, not an obstacle
  • Safety documentation and incident reporting are timely, accurate, and defensible
  • You have begun developing relationships with our TPA, adjusters, and medical providers
  • You are actively pursuing or have enrolled in a relevant professional certification

What Success Looks Like in Year Three and Beyond

  • You own our workers' compensation program end-to-end
  • Our experience mod and captive performance reflect measurable improvement
  • Supervisors across all divisions hold their teams to safety standards without being told to
  • Employees understand and believe in our safety culture, it is not just a program, it is who we are
  • You have grown into the Director of Risk & Safety role with the title, compensation, and authority to match

Why Fence Factory

  • Real investment in your growth; certifications, training, mentorship, and a clear path to Director
  • Executive-level support; leadership that understands safety is a business priority, not a checkbox
  • A mission worth caring about; we are genuinely trying to build something better, and we want you to be part of that
  • Stability and longevity; 60+ years in business, a loyal workforce, and a company that promotes from within
  • A captive insurance structure that rewards strong claim management; you will see the direct impact of your work on company performance

Benefits

  • Health, Vision, and Dental Insurance
  • Pension and Profit-Sharing Plan (401A)
  • PTO / Holiday Pay
  • Company Vehicle
  • Weekly Paycheck
  • Professional certification support and continuing education investment
